Your Guide to Metal Roofing in Dayton Ohio

Have you considered metal roofing for your commercial roof?

Efficient, long-lasting and highly durable – metal roofing has been a top choice for commercial architects for quite some time. It wasn’t until recently that metal began to make its way into the residential sphere, quadrupling its market share within the past ten years. And rightfully so! Metal roofing has several benefits and is a great roofing option for standing up to Ohio weather. Like most things related to home updates, there is no shortage of mixed information available about metal roofing. This is why we’re focusing today’s post on everything you need to know about metal roofing in Dayton, Ohio.

Why metal roofing?

First things first, why metal roofing? If you’re new to roofing, you are likely most familiar with asphalt – one of the most common shingle materials. However, there are several different options when it comes to choosing the most suitable roofing materials for your home. Metal roofs are a great option and have significant advantages over other materials. In addition to being efficient and low maintenance, metal roofs are also applauded for:

  • Ease of installation: Metal roofing materials are generally very lightweight, weighing between 1 to 3 pounds per square foot depending on the exact material. This allows contractors to easily lift and form the roof, making for a quick and breezy installation process.
  • Durability: Metal is extremely strong and even non-combustible. Its durability allows it to withstand severe winter storms, fires and even winds up to 140 miles an hour.
  • Longevity: Because metal roofs are incredibly durable, they have a longer lifespan of 50 to 60 years – two to three times that of an asphalt roof!
  • Energy Efficient: By reflecting the sun’s UV rays, metal roofs stay cooler than non-metal roofs, decreasing the amount of energy used for air conditioning.

Metal roofing is a costly investment compared to other roofing materials. But when you’re investing in a roof that will last five to six decades, the lifespan and durability can be well worth the price tag.

Different types of metal roofing

The term “metal” describes a larger umbrella category with a range of different products underneath it. Each material has its cons and benefits and works best for different budgets. These are some of the most common types of metal materials:

  • Steel: Steel is the hardest metal option, and therefore one of the most popular. It is fit to withstand high winds and hail, and seals out moisture to prevent mold and mildew growth. It’s also one of the most recycled materials on earth, making it the most budget-friendly option of the three.
  • Aluminum: Aluminum is the lightest metal material, making it the easiest to install. It thrives in areas with heavy rainfall due to the fact that it is rust-resistant.
  • Copper: Apart from being appealing to the eye, copper roofs are known for their durability, eco-friendliness and resistance to fire. They have the longest lifespan and can also last up to 100 years, making it the most expensive and luxurious material.

Choosing the right underlayment

Before installing your metal roof, roofers will first install an underlayment on top of the roof sheathing to act as a second layer of protection. It’s important to research the four basic types of underlayment and discuss with your roofing contractor the best option for your home.

  • Asphalt-saturated felt: The most common, affordable underlayment option. This material is most often used on residential, steep-slope homes.
  • Engineered asphalt-saturated felt: Manufactured with fiberglass, engineered asphalt is a stronger, more durable version of regular asphalt.
  • Synthetic: Engineered from polypropylene polymers, synthetics are also highly durable. Its features provide substantial resistance to deterioration, UV damage and fungal growth.
  • Peel & stick: Because it’s a self-adhesive material, peel & sticks are easier to install than other underlayments. Its self-sealing abilities allow for flexibility when adhering to ridges and curves, eliminating the need for nail penetration.
