How Long Does It Take to Shingle a Roof?

Learn more about the factors that affect roofing project timelines

As any roofer will tell you, the faster you repair or replace your roof, the better. That’s because putting off a roof repair or roof replacement will allow damage to become worse, potentially even allowing other parts of your home to become damaged. But as you go about scheduling the necessary roofing services for your home, you may be wondering: How long does it take to shingle a roof?

At JW Roofing, we pride ourselves on our ability to complete many roof repairs and reshingling projects within a day. However, projects vary, with many factors impacting the expected timeline for a given project. So today, we’re taking a look at some of those factors to give you a better idea of how long to expect your project to take.

How long does it take to shingle a roof?

For a typical asphalt shingle roof, the reshingling process will generally take about 1-2 days. Not every roof uses asphalt shingles, however. While asphalt shingles are typically very quick to install, other common roofing materials take longer, as the processes for installing them differ. For example, a slate or concrete tile roof can take as long as 1-2 weeks to complete, or even longer!

Several factors impact the reshingling process

Clearly, the materials used for your roof can have an impact on the timeline for replacement. However, even if we stick with asphalt shingles, the process can take more or less time depending on a number of factors. Let’s take a look:

Weather

Probably the number-one reason for roofing project delays is uncooperative weather. It may turn out that the day you’ve selected to replace your roof simply won’t cut it due to rain, high winds, temperatures or other adverse weather conditions. As roofing is already a risky endeavor, it’s generally ideal to carry out roofing projects in the best weather possible.

Roof size

Typical homes in the U.S. have an area of around 1,600-1,700 square feet, which is what the 1-2 day timeline for shingle replacement is based on. For larger homes, however, the project will take longer. This is simply because there’s more area to cover—and as professional roofers, we don’t cut corners with our work no matter how big or small the project is.

Roof design

Just as roofs vary in terms of size, they also vary in terms of design. Some roofs have a very simple construction, making the shingling process much simpler. However, more complicated roofs, such as those with several different elevations, generally take longer to reshingle. This is also true of roofs with steeper pitches, as it’s more difficult to maneuver on these roofs.

Can a roof be done in one day?

Absolutely! Depending on the above factors, many new asphalt shingle roofs can be installed very quickly. With careful planning and execution, an efficient roofer will be able to install a new asphalt roof within a single day of work. If your roof is larger or features more complicated design elements, however, the process is more likely to take a couple of days to complete.
